What is the order we choose for Japanese character's name?

So if you browse around the wiki you will notice that not all Japanese characters are named the same. Japanese people have their family name first and their first name last, which is different from say, how other characters like American comics would be named.

Anyway i don't remember if it's a rule or just a suggestion but a long time ago when i first started on here i heard that we should flip Japanese characters names around so it's first name, family name? Is this a standard practice or something? Or should we just leave the characters how they are or switch around their names? I am not quite sure since their are characters here who have their names switched around and others who are the same.

Idk about any standards, and there doesn't seem to be one for Japanese characters, even in verse at times, (Case in point, Homura Akemi vs Miki Sayaka). So I think it should just be written as it is most commonly stated in verse.

It's something I remember asking before but got no answer to. It's rather annoying to read japanese names written both ways, as it makes for a terrible lack of consistency.

I think we should have a rule for that.

@gemmy like I just stated and celestial did at times,even in verse they can be refered both ways, so the most common variation should be the one we take here, over consistency I believe.

We pride ourselves in maintaining order and consistency, so the names are something we have to decide about.

Another, while some names are obvious in which is the given name and which is the family name (given names tend to be longer, for example), there are others that seem ambiguous in that regard. Knowing which way the naming is followed will help remedy that without going to another wiki or another website to verify.

Besides, in-verse, rarely do characters ever get referred to with both naming sense. I can't even remember one, and I've read quite a bit.

I also think that we should call the characters whatever they are most commonly referred as. Othervise it would end up confusing for visitors.

Western Order is best I feel. Name then surname.

The order of the name of Japanese characters is reversed, their family name comes first, and then their first name, for example uzumaki naruto. It is confusing to switch around the order of the name and instead have naruto uzukami as people might not know who you are referring to, and it can lead to confusion if some profiles have the order of their names reversed and others don't, as such characters should be name as they are commonly referred to as."

Naruto might be a bad example since everyone knows who naruto is but yea, speaking of naruto his name is reversed as well so maybe it is a good example?

Well, that would screw up lots of pages such as Monkey D. Luffy, and make them sound weird to visitors, so I think that going with what the characters are most commonly referred as is best, whether that is the Western or Eastern order for each individual case.

There's also the factor of dubs and localizations changing names. Phoenix Wright technically has a completely innacurate translation (Lel, California), but since it's so much more known by that in the west we go by it. No casual viewer would know who Naruhodō Ryüichi is from a glance.

I've been making redirects to both renditions of the characters' names as in the To Aru verse. Should I remove them?

No. Redirects to both renditions are a great idea.

Redirects are fine, as i have been saying though the characters names don't have to necessary be how it was in the Japanese version of the series, just how most people would recognize the characters as, whether in the Japanese order or Western order.

Here is my suggested rewrite draft of the regulation text:

"It is preferable that the profile pages are named what the characters they represent are commonly referred as. The order of the name of Japanese characters is reversed, as their family name comes first, and then their first name, for example Monkey D. Luffy. Given that it would be confusing for visitors if we refer to him as Luffy D. Monkey, it is preferable to attempt use the most commonly known English order for each individual character's name, whether that is the Western or Eastern version."

Suggestions for improvements are welcome.
