I really don't know. He's used his overshadow powers to get what he wants in the past and in the show itself. Though I guess you could argue he wants her to do it willingly?

From what I remember he wanted Maddie to love him, remember this is the guy who has gotten everything he wanted one way or another.

Maddie is not only someone who he simps for loves but a challenge or something he can't get through power alone.
