The bell at 221B Baker Street buzzed quietly. Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective, stared up quizzically at the door. He was not expecting any visitors, Watson had gone home for the night, and normally people did not call without an appointment.
Holmes opened the door, staring down at a little portly man in a bowler hat and a nice grey suit. Hercule Poirot doffed his hat. "Mr. Holmes, your reputation proceeds you. May I come in?"
The two sat at Holmes' table. No tea was offered, each knew who the other was, and the atmosphere was thick enough to cut. Poirot got to the point. "Monsieur Holmes, you know who I am. The two of us are the greatest detectives the world has ever seen. But Hercule Poirot does not play equals. Which is why I propose a competition. The next case that greets either one of us, we shall both attempt to solve separately. The winner will be the Greatest Detective in Europe, and the loser must take out an advertisement in the Times publicly admitting their defeat and the winner's superiority. What say you, Holmes?"
Sherlock Holmes took a deep drag at his pipe, then looked up at Poirot. "Normally, when my clients come in, I amaze them with my deductive skills about their person. Do you know what I deduce about you, Monsieur?" His eyes pierced Poirot. "I see a chubby little continental who hasn't solved a case worth anything in years. I see a washed-up police officer playing around in the minor leagues. I see a man who will be forgotten by history, while I, Sherlock Holmes of London, will be famous throughout time! I do not challenge amateurs. Please leave my house immediately."
Poirot turned dark. "Monsieur, you shame yourself! You cannot claim those things about Poirot when you yourself are nothing more than a drug-riddled addict with a slight run of luck!"
Holmes let out a roar, springing to his feet. The two grappled for their guns.
