Well when the dreaming dead god's astral projection was stuck in the chamber in the Heart of Lorkhan he needed a way to create followers for his for his plan to combine everyone into him so that he becomes all that there is. So he created the kinda metaphisical blessing in the form of an incurable divine disease, the Corpus. It basically either corrupted your mind and you became insane and like a zombie thing, or you were one of the chosen ones and you got, in a way, elightened giving eternal life and enhancing your strength.
