Standards on using artwork in profiles

I've a question that's mostly pertinent to book characters.

There are many book franchises (But also of other forms of media, such as text-based games) that there are no official artworks of any characters whatsoever. Often, however, there are fan arts and renditions of such characters. As long as credit is given to the original artist, is it allowed to use fan art as a character's art? And if so, are there any standards about that?

Didn't we literally have a revision about that a couple months back, that official images are more recommended and that special exceptions can apply to characters that have no official art at all, so long as credit is given to the artist? Kinda the situation with some Cthulhu Mythos profiles ATM.

Of course, official artworks are also given artist credits if they are given a transparent background by someone else, as is the rule. (Of course, if both are done by the actual makers of the game then it sorta becomes irrelevant and full credit can be given to the game creators without having to mention it).

Oh, I was unaware of that revision! That's really good to know.

Thanks!
