So how does Genjutsu work?

I still no fully understand what Genjutsu actually do.

For example the whole illusion thng(Tsukuyomi,Tayuya's flute, jiraiya frogs Genjutsu etc)

what excetly is the Genjutsu's affect? does it made physical damage? if so then does that mean that anyone with high level Regenerationn will not be affect by Genjutsu?

Or does Genjutsu make mental damage,hurt the brain or something like that?

It's Mind Manipulation, meant to control, or mess up their mind

Genjutsu is mostly illusions and perception manipulation. Any damage it can deal is mental damage, not physical. Regenerationn has nothing to do with resistance to genjutsu.

And mental damage doesn't mean that the brain gets damaged.

Mental damage refers to damage to one's mind. It can include stuff like disruption of thought processes, sending into coma, unconsciousness, difficulty in thinking, madness etc. Regenerationn only refers to automatic healing of the body, not the mind.

Kakashi didn't suffer from physical damage at all. It was purely mental damage.

Regenerationn regenerates physical damage, mentally manipulating someone will bypass any regen of that character does not resist it

It means that his mind was wounded. Think of mental traume.

Someone with regen isn't "healing" from PTSD and such.

The two instances where genjutsu did damage were the girl from the kaguya clan (anime filler. Has nothing to do with kaguya) and Itachi and his girlfriend.

The former was because she made the body believe that it was being so hard that it actually replicated the wound.

The latter was because his girlfriends brain couldn't handle several decades of memories being bumped into it at "a tenth of a hundreth of a thousandth of a second". This can be regened from, though not any trauma that goes with it.


The itachi novel also mentions a metaphysical mind, which is what the sharingan affects directly, making it impossible to break.

Genjutsu can also be used to make people feel pain from injuries that aren't there. As stated above, it's all in the mind. Your body "thinks" the stuff is real, but it's not, so this Regenerationn won't be applicable because there is no Physical damage to heal.
