Regarding F=MA

Is F=MA a useable method for calculating Lifting strength, I've heard mixed results on its usability from several staff members, but I know of a number of calcs that currently do use it.

So basically, can it be used to find LS and if it can are there limits on when and where it can be used?

I've heard that it's useable for throwing objects but not for stopping objects.
