Questions about Tabletop RPG verses

Just got into some TRPG verse lately and i was wondering, when a game gets a new edition, will the codex books of the previous edition is still usable as the source for tiering character ? or we have to wait for the codex books of the current edition ?

Sorry if this is such a dumb question i just got into the TRPG like 4 days ago

I think that the old one can be used unless contradicted by the new version of the game.
