Question about Soul Manipulation

In a verse where the existence of souls isn't directly stated or acknowledged, would living beings in that verse still have souls or would they be soulless? Would Soul Manipulation work on them?

(I know. This question sounds stupid and the answer seems obvious at a glance, but that's exactly what I'm trying to prove)

I think we assume living beings to have souls by default. Maybe the exception would be fantastic races that are completely different from us or individuals who are alive but not in the same sense as us, like a sapient robot or a golem.
