On effecting Abstract things

How exactly would something “affect” an abstract thing?

ab·stract
adjective
/abˈstrakt,ˈabˌstrakt/

1. existing in thought or as an idea but not having a physical or concrete existence.
"abstract concepts such as love or beauty”

Since abstract literally just means “existing in thought or as an idea” wouldn’t it be not really possible to effect something abstract? (Aside from mind manip, like I guess making everyone think 1+1=3 would change the “thought”(or idea) of 1+1, but that wouldn’t really change 1+1=2, it would just change the idea of 1+1=2 I guess?)

By doing it.

Reading a story right now where the MC exists inside of concepts and thoughts. Then he fought this other guy.

That guy now has the ability to affect abstract beings.

irl, u cannot punch love. In fiction, you can punch love because fiction allows for anything. As for how you can tell if someone can punch an abstract, well, it’s just if you see them hit an abstract.

You need conceptual manipulation or something like that.

Is pretty common in fiction for characters to hit stuff that is not physical or anything, be it abstract or even nonexistent, you just need feats or AE type 1
