In this case stuff like the M2 Browning firing a M33 Ball will have a projectile weight of 45.8 grams and a velocity of 887 m/s within 24 meters of the barrel. The Kinetic Energy of this will, on average, be 18,017 Joules.

The source you used is likely either rounding for simplicity or using something other than a .50 BMG.

Well I'm not an expert in this field but I know Grey Fox has twin .50 caliber Browning M2 Aircraft machine guns

There's also the fact that bullets can do more damage via piercing, but that's not covered in our system. Also, they're typically more like 17 KJ's at launching point; though it will note that muzzle velocity is how fast a bullet is at launch, and it gradually decelerates and loses speed and power due to gravity.
