So where does this "Karmic Retribution" come from? It seems kind of unfounded to me...

Karmic Retribution

"Karmic Retribution" is a fan term, but it is used for a canon concept of Sans' attacks running on KARMA. During the fight, there is a small "KR" next to your health bar, which correlates to the purple "poison" damage you take during the fight. As the fight goes on and you get hit/"poisoned", along messages will pop up essentially explaining what is happening to you and why you're taking this damage.
"You felt your sins crawling on your back."
"KARMA is coursing through your veins."
"Doomed to death by KARMA!"
A lot of people seem to not know the last two exist, as before the last patch, they were exceedingly rare pop-ups during the battle. However, they essentially explain that, as the first box of text implies, you are indeed being killed by your own "sins" as karma takes its toll.
