Going with Leather. John is skilled with swords. From what I can tell that is all. LF has an incredibly high pain tolerance, skilled in stealth, and is skilled with multiple weapons besides the obvious chainsaw. Skilled marksman with his smaller weapons giving him the range advantage. Plus his chainsaw can casually cut through thick metal objects. That will effect the sword a lot (at least I would think so).
