Is the profile for 2D allowed here? Its a profile for a character from a music group.

Hmm okay, only reason i ask is i put in a request to add a verse with similar qualifications some time ago and it was rejected solely because theyre a band, so if that one wasnt allowed why would this one be?

Because, like i said, a similar profile was rejected despite it being almost exactly the same, if one was rejected why would the other be allowed? Ant himself said that personas from bands shouldnt be allowed here.

As does the other series, along with comics, short stories, and an entire two part album dedicated to chronicling a still ongoing adventure, and it was still rejected

I don't think real life personas are allowed here. There was a request a while back for WWE characters to be featured here and it wasn't allowed I think.

So if a band has animated personas and continuity its allowed but if it has irl personas (With animated segments at points) and continuity its not? That doesnt make much sense...

If we didn't allow personas, then we wouldn't allow Andrew Hussie. Plus, I'm pretty sure the band was crafted and don't necessarily represent real people (I could e wrong, though)

Really, as long as a medium tells a story, why should it matter if it originated as music or a comic?

My thoughts exactly

Should i message Ant about this? This is what he had to say about the verse i'm talking about.

Here are our rules concerning this:

"Do not create any joke profiles, as they do not fit into our tiering system. Also avoid creating profiles for fan characters, advertisement characters, YouTube personalities, music videos, memes, and the like. If you wish to create such profiles, feel free to do so in the Joke Battles wiki instead."

I also agree that we should probably remove them.

That would be against our rules.

I don't get why, though. Like I said before, it feels weird and arbitrary to exclude profiles just because something originated from a different method of storytelling than something else. If two mediums tell stories, why should it matter than one tells it through words and the other tells it through music?

Also, "unneeded"? With all due respect, every profile could be josssed up as being ultimately unneeded. We don't need profiles based off Star Wars, Mario or anything else. We have them because we're a wiki dedicated to indexing characters from various fiction. It makes no sense that we're apparently okay with having profiles for PaRappa the Rapper when the only real difference is that one is a video game about music while the other is music.

Well, another fundamental rule of our wiki is:

"All characters in VS Battles wiki profiles should originate within actual stories, from notable or popular works."

I am not informed about this particular case, but if it is simply a self-insert music video character, without any coherent storyline behind it, it goes against the fundamental principles of our wiki.

And if we allow one music video character, it would open the door for more of them. This is a wiki about characters from stories, not throwaway memes, advertisements, or the like.

Given this wiki has 11k profiles, I really wonder if that rule is strictly followed

There is a coherent storyline behind the Gorillaz. Most of the plot is showcased by the various music videos and animated interviews starring the characters themselves, not the irl creators of the band. They do not personify anyone irl, and are completely original characters created for the band. They've had animated shorts, and an upcoming animated series has been confirmed too. They're just as deserving to be on here as Hatsune Miku

Well, if there is an animated series coming up, I suppose that we might be able to allow them to stay.

However, othervise, pure music video characters without a coherent storyline, should still not be allowed.

Im still confused as to why an animated band with a coherent and consistent plot made up of music videos is allowed here but a band of irl characters with a coherent and consistent plot made up of music videos, several comics, an entire backstory and a fleshed out world isnt. Im not against Gorrillaz being here im just confused...

Edit: @Ant Does that mean i can add the verse i was talking about...?

Please explain further. I am not sure what you are talking about.

Anyway, I think that we should preferably stick to the rules of avoiding music video characters. Othervise our members will see it as an excuse to eventually swarm us with nonsense pages.

Perhaps we can delete the pages until the animated series starts?

As long as the music videos have continuity (which the Gorillaz and the verse Weekly is talking about do), I really see no issue with having profiles for them at all. It's not the same as corporate branding mascots (which I agree should not be allowed), they're just characters from a different medium with a different kind of storytelling method.

It depends on how much of a story that we are talking about. Throwaway incoherent snippets do not qualify for fully-realised fleshed-out characters.

Might be worth noting that the Gorillaz are indeed a real band composed of fictional characters with a backstory, who are also a band in said backstory. I haven't been keeping up recently, but this has been going on since 1998, and one of the two creators is the guy behind Tank Girl, so they were indeed intended to have a cohesive narrative.

I think someone already mentioned this, but I also heard they're getting a straight up animated series.

Well, I am uncertain. The problem is that most music video characters do not have a fully-fleshed out plot and backstory. And going by my experience, if we allow some such characters, we will open the door for lots of demands for more, that really are just throwaway incoherent nonsense snippets.

Okay. I suppose that seems sufficient in itself. The problem is just that many of our visitors will not understand the distinction between this and featuring any music video character whatsoever.

Just saying, we allow Vocaloid characters here and they dont have any canon lore or a continuity at all, just video game scenes and music videos...

Maybe profile notes explaining that both series are allowed due to having continuity, fully realized characters and a coherent plot, while most music videos are one-shots.

I thought that Vocaloid was a regular game?

Profile notes might be an idea, yes.

All of the Vocoloid games are rhythm games with the characters doing things in the background.

And yeah notes would be a good idea.
