How to calculate this?

Basically, the groups use magic to contain an explosion then redirecting it to the sky. My question is, what exactly am I suppose to calculate here? Like which formula I suppose to use? Should I just use total air remove from it? Or Should I use formula of energy required to turn entire column of air into plasma like states?
 
I will answer as best as I can based on what I know.

How about using a formula like this, specifically for calculating explosion energy? This can be used if you want to estimate how powerful the explosion that was held back by their magic was.

E = total energy in joules
n = number of molecules (based on air volume and the ideal gas law)
Ei = ionization energy of air (approximately 33 eV per molecule, or 5.3×10⁻¹⁸ J)
