So why, in the same movie, does he still react to being hit by missiles or other weapons, even showing brief signs of pain?

Even when Kong struck him with his axe, piercing deep into his thigh — when the axe was later thrown at a building, the building didn’t even break apart, only showing minor damage like shattered glass.
