Yes, it is described that way, but what actually happened in movie was not like that, so I would say it is more of a metaphorical You will have to show me that humans and mutants are actually being attacked spiritually because what I see is that their minds are being torn apart. If they are attacked spiritually, there is a good chance that they will never be able to return to normal or think critically because of spiritual impact

That doesn't make any sense, it's like saying the wave wasn't affecting them mentally because they didn't end up with brain damage or memory loss and were just suffering physical pain, and all the humans across the planet would have died eventually if the wave hadn't been stopped.
