Let's be clear with some stuff:
  • Argentina were never going to win with how they were playing in their earlier matches when going against such a possession dominating team like Spain. Relying on the opposition breaking down in the last couple of minutes and scramble to properly defend isn't something that would've worked against Spain.
  • There was bound to be a point where Argentina's rough playstyle was going to backfire on them. It should've been way earlier in games like Austria and Egypt, but at least it happened.
  • Unai Simon's biggest pro ended up really saving them. I was never really fond of playing him over Raya and Garcia, but he saved Spain with his runs, so I'll have to say that he made me eat my words.

Regarding this since I didn't originally reply, I'd say that yeah, the refs were indeed absolute garbage and there's many reasons for that.

To start, I do agree that the tackle on Mohammed Salah was indeed not a foul, and that the foul on Lautaro was, so both are fine decisions, however:

Yes, I do agree that Egypt's loss was affected by a lot of mistakes and wrong decisions from the manager, however we can't ignore fouls committed, as those can heavily affect the game.

I can't really remember which players from Argentina committed most of these fouls, all I can recall is someone saying 2 of them were by Cristian Romero, which could've gotten him sent off. Any red card would've realistically affected the game for either teams.

I know this post is very late, but I was on vacation for most of this World Cup, so I wasn't going to be able to send it until some time ago.
