Eve Online Weapons Values

If there are any weapons in EVE Online that can help approximate the combat prowess of its vessels, one of them is the Hybrid Railgun. Among the turret weapons in EVE Online, Railguns and all Projectile Turrets have denotations of the barrel's caliber - their barrel diameters which can be used to measure the sizes of the projectiles they fire.

The biggest railgun in EVE Online are the Dual 1000mm Railguns mounted on Gallente Dreadnoughts and Titans. To put the scale into perspective, Iowa-class battleships had cannons with a 406mm diameter capable of firing up to 1,200 kg shells at mach speeds.

One of the tricky things with EVE weapons is that, while all weapons have a base value for their optimal ranges and falloff ranges (when the weapon's accuracy starts to decrease down to a 50% chance of hitting the target), those values can be changed with the proper skills, modules, and whichever ammo type you are using at the time.

Absolute baseline effective range for the Dual 1000mm Railgun in-game is 162 kilometers. The right skills increases the baseline range to 203 kilometers. An ideal number of advanced Tracking Computer mods ups that range to 300+ kilometers.

The element used as the Railgun charge also influences optimal range - Iron, Tungsten, and Iridium have increased range (with Iron having the greatest increased range at 60%), Lead is baseline, Thorium, Uranium and Plutonium elements have reduced range, Antimatter has 50% the optimal range of Lead. The special Spike round - superdense plutonium sabot with a small rocket unit providing extra velocity - provides 80% increased optimal range (up to 500 kilometers w/tracking computers).

The reason they are "Hybrid" charges is because the shell is titanium while the core contains atoms suspended in a plasma state. In a railgun, the entire shell is fired; in a blaster, the plasma is funneled into a cyclotron, processed into a bolt, then fired.

I judged the width-length ratio of an XL charge to be virtually 2:1, so the estimated dimensions of these charges are 1000 mm in diameter, and 2 meters tall.

Next comes mass. I don't know what the exact specs are for the shell, so I'll assume the shell is thick enough to contain at full cubic meter of whatever plasma is stored inside it. A cylinder of the above dimensions has a volume of 1.57 m^3, so that means 0.57 m^3 Titanium and 1 m^3 plasma.

For my example, I'll use Lead.

0.57 m^3 Titanium mass = 2,565 kilograms

1 m^3 Lead = 11,342 kilograms (presuming the plasma is condensed down to a density similar to regular lead)

Combined mass = 13, 907 kilograms = 13.907 Tons

Since it is a lead projectile, that means baseline range, both with and without tracking computers online (the ideal number is three tracking computers.)

Assuming the full effective range equates to fast the projectile travels:

http://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/kinetic-energy

164 km/s (baseline, no skill bonus) = 187,021,336,000,000 Joules = 1.87 x 10 ^ 14 Joules

203 km/s (skill bonus) = 286,546,781,500,000 Joules = 2.86 x 10^ 14 Joules

304 km/s (skill bonus + tracking computers) = 642,614,656,000,000 Joules = 6.42 x 10^14 Joules

Two shells are fired at once (it is a Dual Railgun), so the total energy from a single railgun mount = 1.284 x 10 ^15 Joules w/skill bonus + tracking computer.

NOTE: This equation assumes the kinetic energy for the whole charge, and does not take into account other skills or modules that, in-game, augment the damage output of the Railguns.

Furthermore, this does not take into account the fact Hybrid Turrets can use Antimatter:
----------------------------------------------------------- “That sound you’re hearing,” Omvistus replied, “is your planet’s bombardment siren. You’ve probably never had to pay much attention to it in the past, seeing as your world is safely under the jurisdiction of CONCORD, but that is no longer the case.” As he spoke, the back window of the conference room took on a noticeably red tint, saturating the room in crimson light. “What you’re seeing now is the targeting laser used to aim my battleship’s six 425 millimeter railgun turrets. At this altitude, the gravity of your planet will augment the standard launch velocity of each solid projectile to speeds well beyond operational specifications, enough to obliterate anything within half a kilometer of the impact site.” Omvistus’s image grew larger on the screen before he continued.

“Anything between that location and two kilometers from ground zero will suffer a worse fate, as the antimatter suspended in each shell escapes its containment field and expands in a random dispersion pattern, colliding with the ambient normal matter on the ground – buildings, trees, children, everything. Whatever these particles touch will experience matter disassociation on an atomic level as, piece by piece, they are reduced to unidentifiable residual particles.” He paused briefly, and then concluded.

“With a single thought, I can reduce your entire city to a smoldering crater... - Xenocracy

Just a kilogram of Antimatter would be two orders of magnitude greater; the above lore indicates the antimatter contained in just six 425 millimeter shells can reduce an entire city when the released antimatter starts annihilating with matter.
