A while ago, I made this calc to determine the durability of Rugal Bernstein from the King of Fighters series. The calc was rejected, but not because the math was incorrect, but because it relied too heavily on assumptions. However, I believe it is necessary to address the context of the calc for which this thread was created.

Context: In the ending of KOF '94, Rugal Bernstein attempts to self-destruct the aircraft carrier on which the fight is taking place in order to kill the heroes. All of the ending cutscenes show the heroes escaping the ship safely, while Rugal is believed to have died. However, Rugal is shown to be alive in the following game, KOF '95, implying that he survived the destruction.

This is basically the gist of it. The main problem with this feat is that, unlike the heroes, we do not see how Rugal survives the ship's self-destruction. Since it is entirely off-screen, that leaves room for two assumptions.

1. Rugal survives the ship's self-destruction by escaping like the heroes. He could have accomplished this by jumping out of the ship in time or escaping aboard an emergency ship or something similar.

2. Rugal survives by tanking the ship's explosion. Given how badly injured Rugal is in the cutscenes, he will not be able to get as far as the heroes, and self-destruction is essentially his last resort of killing himself in order to defeat the heroes.

To back up the assumption that Rugal was still inside the ship when it self-destructed. In KOF 2002UM, he does a similar thing, albeit in an airship instead, by blowing up the place to eliminate the player characters as a last resort.

Now, to wrap up this thread, I will present three options for the feat.

Option 1: Rugal will not scale to the ship destruction because the feat is too vague to be applicable.

Option 2: Rugal can scale to the ship's destruction assuming he is too injured to escape, and KOF 2002UM visually depicts Rugal remaining inside the ship as it self-destructs. However, because the justification is still based on assumptions, he will only receive a Possibly or Likely rating, as shown below:

Attack Potency: (Insert feat here), Likely/Possibly (Insert ship destruction feat)

Option 3: Rugal will be given a straightforward rating based on the ship destruction feat.

TLDR: Determine if the ship destruction calculations above apply to Rugal's durability. Three options above are presented for how this feat will be handled.

Vote Tally:
  • Option 1 (1): @Mr. Bambu
  • Option 2 (0):
  • Option 3 (0):

A major issue here is that a character doesn't scale to the full blast of the explosion just for being in it, anyways. The feat seems to be legitimate (although it does rely on a lot of assumptions...), but even if we took it at face value, we don't know how close to the epicenter Rugal was, nor how many barriers the blast may have had to pass through to get to him.

He could have escaped, so my end vote would be Option 2, but there's so many unknowns that I'm forced to go Option 1.
