Yes, you are reading the title of this thread correctly. This also will apply to Vlad Plasmius and Vlad Masters. So yeah, it turns out they might not be the same person in a sense. So we all know the origin, Danny activates the Ghost Portal and boom!, his body is fluded with ecto energy and his molecules get messed up and he gains ghost powers along with the ability to turn into a ghost.
To get straight to the point, Danny Phantom is actually a second Danny. In Season 1 episode 6 titled "What You Want". The show introduces us to the Fenton Ghost Catcher and what this device does is exspunge/remove ghosts from an object or person. So when Danny accidently flew through this object, his ghost half was removed from his body and it fell to the ground and ghost Danny quicly flew back into his body and merged back with him. Danny Fenton then sticks his hand in the device and ghost Danny's hand was removed and when he pulled it back through the hands fused back together.
So even though Danny legit told himself to stay away from this device he was stupid enough to use it in season 2 episode 6 titled "Identity Crisis". In this episode Danny is tired of his hero life clashing with his personal life so he decides to use the Fenton Ghost Catcher to as he thought "duplicate himself"... Yeah so the device splits Danny in two like it did before and Danny Fenton had a laid back personality while Danny Phantom had the heroic personality which shows us both are two different entities. When they tired to fuse back the way they did in the previous episode like before it did not work. Now it isn't stated exactly why bu I assume it was because they were seperated for to long and they needed to use the Fenton Ghost Catcher again to truly fuse back.
This happens again in Season 2 episode 8 & 9 titled "The Ultimate Enemy". In this episode after losing his friends and family Danny no longer wanted painful emotions which somehow Vlad translated into "remove his ghost half". Anyway, Vlad uses the Ghost Gaunlets to literally rip Danny Phantom out from Danny Fenton and it works but this time Danny Phantom didn't have any humanity so he ripped Vlad's ghost half out from him and quickly fused with it and that makes Dan Phantom.
It shows us multiple times that Danny Fenton and Danny Phantom are actually two different people. They are just connected on a stronger level than normal Possession. As we see though when they are seperated, neither dies or vanishes so given this. If Danny Fenton gets killed, that wouldn't kill Danny Phantom because while he is apart of him, Danny Phantom is still a ghost, he is just ectoplasmic energy and consciousness.
