Anti-orbital nukes?

Question for stats/tactics "The Human Race", or civilization comparable to modern-day earth technologically.

Is it possible to re-purpose long-range missiles and nukes to shoot down targets in space?

E.G. We have civilization as advanced as modern-day Earth. They are attacked by alien space dreadnought, which is currently on planet's orbit. Planet's denizens try to re-program their nuclear arsenal, so that instead of aiming it at each-other, they aim it at the damn dreadnought. How far away can they reach this way?

In other words: what's the Range at which modern-day civilization can meaningfully hit enemy targets in space, and what would be modern humanity's plan of repelling alien invaders that are enacting an orbital bombardment?
