It's been stated that he uses telekinesis somewhere in the game and the comics too, I think. He's also used his abilities on non-metallic objects like stone. There's also the whole yellow aura that appears around everything he lifts and that he uses to shield himself. He just has a notion towards using scrap metal since that's what he grew up around and is most abundant in a bustling city.

Alden Tate has comparable AP, far better ranged attacks, can manipulate the environment around him with telikinesis.

He should take this pretty solidly.
