Do characters, when fighting each other, know the other language?

Like, If I make Dipper pines, which lives in Califórnia, and Taiga, who lives in Japan, would they autonatically understand each other, even trought they knowlegement of japanese and English are not shared?

I can't find anywhere If that's the case.
