Yes yes this technically happened in the second game, but she had more help in regards to killing Joel at that time, this matchup will be a lot more even than what TLOU 2 did. Abby vs TLOU 1 Joel with all the guns and crafting tools they could reasonably use in the middle of a fight, takes place in the abandoned mall in the Left Behind DLC.

Joel wins handedly. For reference, here is the difference between these two characters. Abby is a Buff gurl who managed to cross half the country dealing with some of the WLF but mostly the Seraphites along her way, but ended up getting captured in the end. Joel survived for almost 20 years prior to the beginning of the first game, defeated an entire terrorist group singlehandedly with the fireflies, is way more versatile and crafty with all the weapons and bombs he can create, and while I would argue Abby is better or equal in Hand to Hand she is outmatched in range, tactics, and experience. Joel wins handedly.

Sure, Abby has more physical strength than Joel, but not only does Joel have a lot of experience against enemies with her similar strength like bloaters, he's also smart enough to use the range game against characters like them when he knows he can't merely overpower them through brute force alone.

As for equipment they are relatively equal in terms of what they can craft and the different types of guns, except Joel has an assault rifle which can help with the pressure a lot more due to the constant rate of fire. So Joel edges out there too. In the end, Joel should take this fairly easily thanks to over 20 years of experience when it comes to fighting Humans and anyone or anything physically stronger than him and due to him having an edge in equipment.

H2H combat may be equal between them, with Abby having some kind of proper training...err well, whatever kind of proper fight training she could have gotten versus that of the 20+ years Joel has but he definitely has the advantage in experience in getting into so many fights both close and range combat so in the end, it'll go to him here.
