So the basic gist in the "Cradle" series characters of a certain tier known as "Sages" gain a connection to an "Icon" which they can directly control and manipulate. In addition to the ability to directly controlling their Icon they gain the ability to directly alter reality which is described as operating on a conceptual level.

Probably Type 2, Type 1 if you can find statements of Icons or the Way being disconnected, seperate, or beyond reality/the universe or whatever.

"The Way" is described in canon as kinda like a vine that Iterations(universes in this context) rest on and the basis for all existence.

Though it has been shown that general Authority/Icons & it's powers still operate even while an iteration is completely cut off/separated from the way. Though certain Authorities which are considered direct aspects of the way stopped working.
