I mean, things like mph, m/s, km/h are the very least self-evident, but what does the "c" mean in speed or what it stands when it comes to FTL?

It's an abbreviation for Celeritas which was the Latin word for speed. Which is just what various scientists decided was the unit for lightspeed.
