what's causing the pressure at the bottom of the ocean then? Like people can't go down there and stuff gets crushed at the depths

There is pressure, it just doesn't make it harder to lift stuff.
The pressure will absolutely squash you to death. It's just that this pressure comes from all directions equally, meaning that one part of the pressure pushes an object you try to lift down, while another part pushes it up. In total the forces nearly cancel each other out.
The effect water pressure has on lifting is buoyancy and it actually makes things easier to lift.
