Well you do what you can, not assuming as much as possible, taking most things at face value. Most of the lore doesn't change much. It is just...confusing really. The abilities for characters like GF and ST can be vague so only the abilities that are concrete can be used. We can't use fan theories or we might just end up with Sans scaling to Ness, or ash being immortal or something like that. Those are the extremes but still.
