Hello.

If you check the wiki navigation bar folder "Featured: Characters", you will notice that it seems rather empty, and contains some possibly inappropriate entries, with Arceus and All-Star Superman.

I think that it might be better to select 10 of the most popular iconic character profiles within the wiki instead, as this would be more appealing for new visitors.

Then again, maybe we should keep All-Star Superman as well, as Kavpeny made an effort with editing the page to become a properly structured example of what a character profile should look like. Using the Superman (Post-Crisis) page instead might be an idea though.

Well, the All-Star version is not nearly as well known, whereas the Post-Crisis version is the current mainstream one.

Well, current Superman is actually a fusion of Post-Crisis and Post-Flashpoint into one complete Superman (spoilers I guess).

But yes, basically Post-Crisis in personality.

Personally, I like the idea of keeping the "Featured" tab as very iconic characters, but also very well written and well justified profiles, to give new users an idea of the standard of quality we abide by.

If we do the most iconic pages, I think it would be best to try to use characters from different mediums, as to not appear strictly anime or comic focused. For example:

Goku and Naruto/Saitama/Sailor Moon could represent the Anime profiles

Superman (Post Crisis/All Star) and Thor or The Hulk could represent Comics, DC and Marvel respectively.

Mario and Sonic/Link could represent the Video Game profiles

Gandalf and Harry Potter/Aslan could represent Literature profiles

I guess Optimus Prime (G1 Cartoon) could represent Western Animation, but I'm not sure if the page is up to snuff and/or the character isn't as iconic as the rest.

Well, more specifically, the Post-Crisis version was supposedly split in two, and then eventually re-merged again.

Personal Taste shouldn't matter with the featured characters. They should be characters who are either iconic in general, from very popular works (Preferably not the "hit anime of the season", but something that's truly popular and well liked for years), and possibly famous on Vs Community.

Oh, and their pages should be good.

Post-Crisis Superman, Son Goku are two I nominate (no brainer). Also Spider-Man would be good, either Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader, and Sailor Moon. Mario and Sonic for videogames would work.

I'd do Vader over Luke. This might be one of the few times that the antagonist is more popular than the protagonist.

@Matthew & Darkanine Yes, those are good suggestions. Luffy and Doctor Who are other major iconic characters.

Yeah, Darth Vader over Luke sounds good to me. I think Gandalf and/or Harry Potter is iconic enough to be added to the list, though.

There should be at most 2 from a genre though. We don't want to look tilt towards a certain genre, for example, lit or anime or LN. For example, if we used Goku and Moon, we shouldn't use Naruto. If we use Goku and Naruto, we shouldn't use Moon. Same with Supes, Hulk, and Thor, and Mario, Sonic, and Link.

Anyway, as was mentioned previously, the pages in question should preferably be well-written as well. I also think that Post-Crisis Superman and Spider-Man are the most iconic DC and Marvel characters respectively, and that we do not have room for more than one character from each franchise.

I agree. Keeping it at one character per franchise is a good idea and shows that we are overall unbiased.

By the way, what about western film? I think Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker's profiles are pretty well written.

Darth Vader should be fine to include.

I think Sailor Moon over Naruto is preferable, since I'd like at least one female character amidst 10, and Sailor Moon is a vastly more important manga historically than Naruto.

Okay. That makes sense.

Luffy should probably be included though. One Piece is the most popular comicbook in the world today.

However, I do not think that Saitama qualifies.

I don't think Saitama qualify either. Luffy is good.

Maybe we should put Cloud Strife or some other videogame character over Sonic.

I think that composite Link would probably be more appropriate than Cloud Strife.

Superman (Post Crisis), Son Goku, Sailor Moon, Super Mario, Monkey D. Luffy, Darth Vader, Spider-Man.

Harry Potter and Sora are also potential, the former would be cool since it'd be a Book Character.

In fact, I like Sora over Cloud.

Edit: Sure, Composite Link.

How about the following 10 characters?

Superman (Post Crisis), Son Goku, Sailor Moon, Mario, Monkey D. Luffy, Darth Vader, Spider-Man, Link (Composite), Doctor Who, either Harry Potter or Gandalf

Gandalf is more iconic, but Harry's profile is better.

I dunno about Doctor Who, though. Seems kinda like a bizarre choice. I get that he's popular, but eh.

Naruto should be put in Luffy's place, he is far more recognizable and notable than Luffy from a global standpoint, almost on par with Goku. Sonic should be on the list as well, but I suppose Mario is better.

Harry Potter for sure.

Maybe Sonic over Link? We would be using two Nintendo characters. But Link is more relevant than Sonic nowadays.

And yes, Harry Potter for a book character.

@Matthew Okay. Never mind about Doctor Who then. Perhaps both Harry Potter and Gandalf?

@Sera Are you certain about that Naruto is more notable than Luffy? One Piece sells a lot more copies, as far as I am aware, although the anime series isn't comparatively very well-crafted, I suppose.

I would like putting Saber to represent Visual Novels, too, even if Fate/ isn't nearly as popular as the other franchises.

I am fine with either Naruto or Luffy, but not both.

Saber isn't iconic at all though, so I disagree about including the character.

In any case, I suppose that our audience mostly likes Naruto better, so I suppose that we could include him instead of Luffy.

Yes, One Piece sells more, but One Piece is not as popular in the west as Naruto. The character Naruto is more recognizable.

I agree with putting Sailor Moon in there. I'm not familiar with the series myself but it is historically important and at least one or two females in there would be a nice idea. Let's not make it an all male bastion.

As for Video Games, which iconic video game character has the best written profile here? I'd say John-117 but that's just me being a Halo fan. What about Mario, Sonic, Link, Cloud, Doomguy? Doomguy seems like a nice choice. He should be universally popular.

Pikachu could indeed be a candidate for Game Characters. If not Mario and Sonic.

For video games I'll go for Master Chief, Doomguy, or Commander Shepard (There's a new Mass Effect game released so it may be good timing for Shepard, but I'd think Doomguy is most logical over all 3)

Also, idk about using Gandalf, LotR has kinda died down atm since there's not going to be anything new for what could be a long time.

I agree that Doomguy is probably the best choice. His games did start a whole new era of gaming. He is no less iconic than the likes of Goku and Darth Vader in my opinion as far as video games are concerned.

For literature, Harry Potter and Voldemort are good choices.

How about Godzilla? I see no reason why we can't use him.

I think Doomguy is a good pick. DOOM is an extremely iconic and well known franchise that's still going strong and basically started a new era of gaming.

Master Chief and Shepard both seem way to new to use, in my opinion.

We can use composite Godzilla instead of Gandalf, if you wish.
