I don't recall a statement about him needing to understand the ability. All that's required is he's subjected to it, and then a timer starts for him to adapt to it. And every time he's subjected to the ability after the timer starts, it speeds up the adaptation.

I saw it some months ago. It was something about analyzing the Cursed Energy used in the CT to counter it. It was a large reason why I thought Maho couldn’t adapt to non-CE abilities.
