Storm question: KE and CAPE

So apparently the wiki reached an agreement that CAPE will be the standard method to calculate storm feats. So I have 2 questions:

1. When exactly can you use KE? What proofs must be shown?

2. How do you decide the CAPE value to use for your calculation, out of the 5 current values (1000, 2500, 4000, 5980 and 8000 J/kg)?

Now, not the biggest expert, but I am pretty sure KE can be uaed when it's provable that the clouds are being moved, not created.

That should depend on the kind of cloud. Tough, I am not sure which cloud has which density, sorry.

1. KE can be used when the clouds are moved. CAPE or condensation can be used when they are not, or there's no proof they are.

2. Depends on the instability I think, though I often don't know which value to use as well.

Sorry for reviving a dead thread. I just had a question about CAPE and condensation. How come we can’t use both in calcs? And also, how do we determine how unstable a storm is?

For the second question: I guess we just eyeball how violent the storm is in question.
