Ryu Hayabusa vs Nier

Hmmm...I gotta think about this. Initially I said that this thing strongly favored Hayabusa. But typing it out, Nier may have a few tricks up his sleeve.

First thing that stands out to me is that Ryu was officially trained as a ninja. Nier didn't really have any training. He was taught by experience.

Ryu is also resistant to life-force absorption which is a hard counter to another one of Nier's abilities. And that sword of chaos sounds a lot like some of Nier's spells.

He also has no counters to time stop nor to stealth. I guess Weiss can call out people if they're visible but Ryu can drop a smoke bomb.

Question: is ninpo magic a buff or an attack? Cuz Nier does have the ability to absorb and even redirect magical attacks.

He has a shield that can make him invincible for a period of time.

He does have the ability to cast poison, weaken, confusion, and paralysis. There's even the ability to drain his opponent's magic.

But many of Ryu's abilities seem to be the result of mastery over his bodily functions as opposed to magic.

It's says he's immune to everything while casting ninpo, but that's only casting ninpo which means all other times he can be hit by the other effects. Also, is ninpo a buff? Attack? Cuz it can be absorbed by dark gluttony if it's an attack. But we don't see Nier absorbing anti-magic shields so he probably can't just suck it up if it's a buff.

The ability to reflect projectiles is dangerous to Nier. Was about to say that it wouldn't work since it's magic. Then I remember we see Grettel nearly kill YonHa by deflecting a lance shot.

Nier can use items. Well, there's no poison in Ryu's arsenal so the antidotal weed is useless. Leaving him healing items, things that double his physical abilities, and items that half taken damage.

Nier could pop a shield then run out of the smoke.

And engaging in close quarters while dark whirlwind is engaged is dangerous.

Time stop is the scariest thing for him. Not only does he have no counters to it soft or hard, the implications are huge.

But Nier does have the ability to cause paralysis and while not technically time stop it still has the same effect.

Wait a minute, isn't Ninja Gaiden's time freeze only able to be triggered by an item?

There's a discussion about Ryu receiving an upgrade, if the assorted people can focus long enough to get it done. Based on their performance so far, it might happen sometime in 2030.

Of course, there's also a planned Drakengard revision which would definitely impact Nier. Based on what I've learned, either I can do it entirely myself or we can wait for the others, which will result in it maybe getting done sometime between 2030 and 2100. If at all.

Alright, my vote will depend on the following question.

Is Nimpo magic a magic attack or a buff?
Does Ryu have access to time freeze since it was a lootable item in the NES game?
His elemental attacks, are they magic based or from mastery of his bodily functions?

While I'll wait for the Ninja Gaiden supporters. Going by Ryu's profile. Nimpo seems to be used for attacks, not buffs or amps. Ryu does have time stop techniques without the use of an item via the Hayabusa spirit.

I guess I'll bump this. Until further notice I'll cast a vote for Ryu Hayabusa. After thinking about it, this was closer than I first thought but I'm still going for Ryu. These two surprsingly have solutions to a lot of each other's stuff. Ryu has stealth Nier has dark wall for invincibility. Nier has Weiss which effectively doubles his attack speed and Ryu can make a copy of himself. Ryu has timestop and Nier has paralysis (Yeah time stop is technically better but in a 1v1 you get your opponent to stop moving so same effect). Dark gluttony can absorb then redirect Ryu's magic. Ryu will have an immunity to life leech. And they both have stat amps.

But for me the tie breaker is the simple fact the Ryu has real training and Nier doesn't.
