in the case where an author doesnt hold the rights of copyright & the IP of his work. who takes precedence over canonicity? them or the IP holder?

say an author recognizes one work is canon to his verse while the IP holder doesnt recognize it as such or vice versa. which source should we take as correct?

Could you provide a bit more detail?

Is there a cross-reference between the works?

say the ip Holder publishes a sequel to the verse, they say its an official sequel to the original work. the og author steps in & says its not.

Example:

Kamiya says DMC and Bayo exist in the same world

Capcom doesn't agree.

This but with books
I mean, if there are elements that are similar to both works (like a similar magic system, mentions of characters, etc., etc.), I think it should be fine to follow what the author said. If there is nothing, I would be iffy, because that could be a one-off statement that was declared while not taking into account everything it would imply.

For that specific case, I wonder. Maybe on the profiles, it would be like "two different keys", but the "sequel" could be treated as chronologically after the original? A bit like DB Super/Daima, for example. or maybe two different profiles...

Kamiya only worked on 1st devil may cry game. The rest of the series is not written or directed by him. He does not have any say on the current DMC as is. It would be pretty weird to say a guy who only worked on 1st game also has authority over later games. I think it would be at best its own separate verse.

The profiles are for the franchise of DMC on the wiki, so I guess that's why it doesn't pose a problem. Seeing it like this, yeah, it's "wherever the franchise go" ig?

is the work just some random movie? Think the IP holder would be the one with control here.

Pretty sure even outside the wiki IP holder has the control. Could be both though since the author works on it.
