Professional Wrestling General Discussion Thread

Nah man Night 1 was ass the main event between Seth, Roman, and Punk was the only standout

Jade vs Naomi and Knight vs Fatu were pretty good, but the fact that the best match other than the triple threat was a 3.75/5 says a lot

That being said, Night 2 was far better, but still flawed

The first 3 stretch of matches was great. Not a single of those matches were below 4 stars

Joe Hendry appearing to face Randy was funny, but Randy deserved better imo

The show starts to take a nosedive once the Logan vs AJ match starts. I don't know why, but AJ might be the most cursed wrestler in Mania history

All of the matches he had at Mania that we thought we're going to be great end up being disappointments, and the matches we don't expect to be great end up being his best Mania matches. That Logan vs AJ match wasn't bad, but it was pretty boring

Cody vs Cena was a solid main event match. John Cena clearly isn't the same performer he was back in his prime, but he didn't look bad here he was moving pretty well

The crowd was mostly against Cody here, which was a great sight to see, especially when you consider the fact that Cena was the one who was getting boo'd by those exact same crowds

The match was going well until Travis came out and took 3 minutes to get to the damn ring. He then helps Cena and Cena just...wins anticlimactically. I was expecting Rock to come out, not just Travis. The ending was pretty flat. Cena got his 17th title though so all is good. I wasn't really vibing with Cody's reign.

To be honest, I think Joe Hendry was one of the best options they could have done. The whole storyline went Haywire due to KO's injury so anything is gonna feel like a step down by default and all of the other big stars are doing their own things and have their own programs. So there's no big name left off the Mania card that was available for Randy.

Might get some heat for this, but I've been feeling for a while that modern AJ Styles (2021-Now) at least is a bit overrated, still great though.

I don't even think it's the matter of Cena not being where he once was as a performer. It's just Cena trying to incorporate his usual style as a heel now compared to a babyface.

Stratton vs Charlotte really wasn't that much of a stinker (all be it awkward at some points) and El Grande Americano vs Rey Fenix was a pretty fun showcase match for Fenix too and still plays into the story they're telling with Grande. Gunther vs Jey and New Day vs War Raiders were boring though.

I do agree that the triple threat was the only thing that felt "Mania" worthy, but I really wouldn't call Night 1 bad, just...mid.

Like... that's it?

After all of the awful booking decisions during Cena's retirement tour (and this year in general), that's it?

It doesn't feel like it's over...

They better put all their stocks and creative juices behind Gunther. Unlike Bum Lesnar, he'll be there for the long haul, will show up every week, and still has years on the shelf. So build him from that and they can build others around Gunther.
Just don't make him do shit like tap out to the Yeetman again.

Not like this affects me that much as a regular viewer though. SNME is my first full WWE show in maybe 5 years, and I didn't even see all of it).

Cena went out with a "star wars" ending.

GUNTHER is getting nuclear levels of heat now.
Now:
▶️Have Gunther retire Aj Styles
▶️Have Gunther retire Brock Lesnar
▶️Have Gunther retire Chris Jericho
Have him be undefeated ultimate Childhood Killer Villain and when in 2027 or 2028 you have that next big American hero who you can build the company around, that's when you have Gunther lose and pass the torch. This is as old school & classic as it can get as far as Booking goes 🔥

HOLY SHIT this whole John Cena tap out has brough out some of the greatest conversations around the world whether it's reddit, twitter or youtube.
Jason going up against JD was fire 🔥
This is why I love Pro Wrestling so much

It really REALLY makes you have wonder have WWE gone to Hollywood?
Every week they show Netflix celebrities and tv show host sitting in the crowd, then the UNREAL behind the scene show telling everyone "Hey look we are scripted" and now Cena posting Obi Wan ending pic...
I donno makes you wonder.

You have to explain what you mean by "gone Hollywood".

WWE simply postured more into presenting their product as fictional media in the same sense as studios present TV series. Of course, with Triple H at the forefront plastering his name as the mastermind of the show, which gets him all the deserved love and hate from the WWE fanbase.
One positive about it is that fake outrage over other promotions breaking kayfabe has largely died down, since WWE is now the biggest kayfabe breakers of them all.

Anyways, I don't really give guys like JD any fraction of the time of a day. There's already enough clowns actually involved in the wrestling biz.

Ngl that match will forever haunt Gunther 😭

And tbh, it just makes his character all the more interesting

He claims John Cena tapped out like a little ***** (he tapped with a smile on his face), meanwhile he tapped out to Jey Uso in 5 seconds while he was writhing in agony

Dragunov already made Gunther tap like a *****. It's really more about Jey being an unimpressive wrestler while using his own moves, let alone using moves outside his repertoire.
It's like if CM Punk defeated Gunther with a Buckshot Lariat.

There are instances of matches doing the gimmick of "Wrestler uses the same style as his/her opponent to fight and/or defeat them" and unless that wrestler can do their opponent's moves well or the match is well thought out, the result is crap. Like Gunther vs Jey.

AEW isn't exempt from this happening either, although the last time I can recall was so long ago. It was Thunder Rosa vs Miyu Yamashita where Miyu had to sell Rosa's soft-looking kicks.

instead of having original and creative endings using Hollywood materials to justify their booking decisions.
An example would be:
▶️Why do I or us fans to sit and decipher all the clues when it comes to Wyatt Six promos and qr code stuff they when they debuted.
▶️Why do Avengers end game needs to be used to AEW and WWE to crown Cody Rhodes champion WM 40 and bring bringing end to Death Riders storyline.
It feels like they are chosing scenes out of Hollywood movies and comics rather creating their own original stuff
(but that's just minor nitpick from my point of view and some fans and that's what makes wrestling interesting)

well that's your opinion.
I don't like Jim Cornette and I feel Undertaker's Seven Feet under podcast is the most scripted thing ever with no genuine authenticity but that doesn't stop me from listening to good back and fourth opinions about a product.
For instance: I love Solomonster idea that Cena heel turn should have never happened and entire 2025 run of his could've been about him chasing number 17 and him acknowledging last time he won a match was several years ago (which he did when the year started and he announced himself for the rumble), lots of people wanted that to be the story.
Nothing wrong in listening to plethora of ideas.

I don't have any strong opinions on Solomonster. I may have some vague recollection of him but that's it.
There's no problem at all listening to podcasts except when the podcaster is known for making gross and meaningless content, which is what JD is known for. He may have had opinions and views that align with mine but it's been overshadowed by him being weird. In the same vein that Cornette the wrestling historian is overshadowed by Cornette the hateful bigot. Good luck to their viewers who can somehow filter through all that bullshit they spew to get to the opinions that isn't trash fire at best but it's intolerable to me.

TBH the only internet wrestling content I consume on occasion is DPW.

I don't have any strong opinions on Solomonster. I may have some vague recollection of him but that's it.
He's the commentator of independent Wrestling Promotion House of Glory since past 7 years.
Whose world champion was Jacob Fatu, Matt Cardona/Zack Ryder and Ricochet.

I think Solomonster is a very good wrestling encyclopedia. He often does 1970 and 1980s events reviews. I never even knew who the legendary Von Erich Family was until he talked about them several years back, His knowledge of pro wrestling industry and it's event are fascinating. I often watches these:

Cena appeared on Cody's podcast last night.
This to me is the most "human"John Cena interview ever, And it feels less robotic and scripted.
Damm the storytelling, that's all I'll say.

It should come to no surprise that the fans blamed Triple H when he and Cena were playing hot-potato on whose idea was the bad stuff that comprised Cena's retirement run. "We're doing what John wants" vs "I just do what I'm told."
The fans cannot hate Cena at that moment so the heat was inevitably gonna pass over to the next guy who is most at fault.
