Peak Human with European Longsword vs Peak Human with Katana

Its been discussed on dedicated sword forums IIRC. The reason katanas are utilized so well is just the skill, if both guys were equal in skill, the broadsword guy would stomp.

It's impossible to know unless one of the swordsman have luck manipulation, Since both of them have equal skill so who wins the fight is the person with more luck, but i think the european sword is more likely to win because of the versitility it has.

European sword is made of better steel and designed with deliberately blocking other swords in mind without taking real damage. The katana would crack and shatter in the first few exchanges while the western sword would be fine.

Considering that alone, the western sword user is at an advantage the longer such a fight goes.

Katana guy midstomps.

Longsword has a bigger blunt force but Katana has a WAY bigger cutting power, a higher attacking speed and has a better versatily.

Since both have the same Stats actually Katana guy midstomps...

The Katana has more cutting power that's true, but faster and better versability? No. and Longswords aren't blunt and they aren't for smacking someone in the armor they were very sharp, if someone wanted to use blunt force they would use an warhammer or an axe or mace and they have way more versability than any Katana and a swordsman can swing a Katana at the same speed of an Longsword. saying that an Katana is quicker even tough it has around the same weight of an longsword is bs. Some Katanas are actually heavier.

I don't think they are wearing armor since it would be a dumb fight if they were, Imagine two people hitting eachother with swords doing no damage and even then the European sword would have an advantage over the Katana since stabbing trough the gaps of the armor is actually an thing they did in the past and the Katana can stab as well but's harder to do beause of the tip.

But i think nobody is wearing armor here, they are wearing just clothes maybe.

That video was refuted several times by people who actually study Historical weapons and martial arts.

in that video the longsword is blunt and the armor is made of shit metal.

Here a video debunking the other video.

These myths have been debunked time and again.

Cutting power: A well made European longsword can easily rival the most well made katanas in cutting power. Hell, some really well made and well sharpened longswords can, on a one handed stroke, rival the cutting power of a two handed katana stroke (in the right hands of course).

^ I would also like to mention that there are swords out there which outdo both longswords and katanas in terms of slicing power. The Indian talwar and the Persian Shamshir are notable examples.

Speed/Agility: This myth is no less ridiculous. European longswords weigh roughly the same as katanas. They tend to weigh between 0.9 and 1.5 kg. How much do katanas weigh? They're in the same weight range. Furthermore, properly made longswords have a point of balance closer to the hilt compared to katanas. This makes them actually better balanced overall in the wielder's hand compared to the blade-heavy feeling katanas. This means longswords should have better dexterity in combat. And they do. HEMA practitioners do talk of historical combatants doing some rather ninja-esque shit with their longswords. These include feinting and then, with a flick of the wrist, suddenly switching the angle of the attack and thrusting up through a weak spot in your opponent's armour (such as the armpit). You would find it more difficult to pull that off with the comparatively blade heavy katana (especially with one hand).

Well, about speed, i have this. You know how crazy this was??? Also, thanks to it's length, Katana has a better mobility (60-73 cm length while longsword has a 100-130 cm).

Also, i'm left-handed.

LEFT HAND RULES!!!

Give that dude a longsword and he'll do the same thing. The katana isn't faster than any sword. Lenght doesn't mean that it has better mobility an axe has an shorter lenght than the katana and the longsword but it's very heavy to swing around unlike the katana and the longsword.

Akira1298 is right. Give that guy a longsword of similar weight and allow him to familiarize himself with the weapon and he will be able to do the same.

tbh it depends on the skills of a person with the weapons as these weapons are experts at different fields of battle so its honestly up to who can apply better in what situation

No they don't. When comparing mobility of two swords that have similar mass, the sword that has the point of balance closer to the hilt is going to be better. It is going to be easier to move around and easier to manipulate with the wrist alone. As I said above, longswords have a point of balance closer to the hilt than katanas i.e. they're less blade heavy and feel better balanced in the hand.

This is true. But objectively speaking, longswords do seem to have the better design. The katana is a victim of resource crunch that resulted in its makers having to adapt and cut corners.
