Naruto Databook Standing

It's extreme obvious that when it comes to the Naruto databooks, they are written off in the moment as being inaccurate, but this is false. They are extremely accurate. Sure, there are some hyperbole statements inside of the databooks as with all databooks. One thing i'm noticing though is that here on VsBW, you guys write off the databook based on headlines that are obviously written to be hyperbole. Theheadlines aren't a description of the ability or a fact of the character. The databook says Kurama can reduce the world to ash in his headline, which is intentional hyperbole.

At the same time, it's also a bit hypocritical to say they are unusable when there are a lot of cases they are used still.

I would like to make a proposition that i think is better for everyone regarding the Naruto databook.

1.) We disregard headlines because they are intentional hyperbole and don't speak for the person or an ability description.

2.) We only go by what's actually stated in the desscription of the ability.

3.) If something is hyperbolen in the description or considered outlier, THEN it is rendered unusable.

4.) We don't throw the databook out the window based on a hand full of wrongs, instead simply adopt a case by case approach to what's in the databook. If Light Fang is labeled Hyperbole in the Databook, that does not mean Sakura's Cherry blossom impact is inaccurate, and so on.

Just going to say something that came to mind regarding the guidebooks, some of the hyperbolic statements people bring up may be mistranslations. Allow me to provide an example.

"The fierce tornado that blows the entire universe away"

This is the infamous universal Temari statement, but if you look into things a bit more. Not only do you realise it's most likely a mistranslation, but it ain't related to power levels at all either. First, the rest of the text mentions nothing about universal-level power. Which is evidence for the header being misinterpreted.

Second, world and universe share the same character in Japanese (if I recall correctly) so it's plausible the translator just happened to go with one definition rather than the other; as a result made an awkward header which people completely took the wrong way. The quote is supposed to be "The Fierce tornado that blows the world away", which just so happens to feature an idiom.

It's possible other parts of the databook were given the same treatment as this statement I analysed.

No, the Japanese character for universe is Õ«çÕ«Ö (Uchü), while the character for world is õ©ûþòî (Sekai).

I see, although I don't think this throws a wrench in things; still think it's a mistranslation. With that said, I think people should find a better translated one. If they're going to use it here that is.

That is not entirely true.

Sekai is exchangeable for World and Universe. Hoshi, AFAIK specifically refers to Planet and Uchu is exchangeable for Universe and Space i.e. outer space in general

Sekai only means world, it's just that "world" can refer to either a planet or universe depending on the context.

Hoshi refers to planets and stars as it just means celestial bodies.

I don't mean it as in the translator mistook the different characters, I mean it as the translator didn't want to change things to make the statement more coherent; actually, fit with the following text.

There is an official Viz databook translation. Though they haven't made te last one yet. So far, only the first 3 are out. And oddly enough, in the official release, Kirin doesn't say anything about being light speed like what was going around.

If you compare the translation from the scan I linked; the correction I provided, You will find out that the latter fits with the following text; removes the massive inconsistency which is Temari being universal level. You don't need much more to prove this was an awkward translating job.

Did you read my prior post? Because I'm sure I gave an explanation as to why the correction surpasses that of the original scan. And you are aware that when it comes to translating pretty much any language to English going for a literal approach isn't the best idea?

It was a figure of speech gone awry; you're finding that hard to believe for some reason. Going so far as to call my argument shallow.

I think we're not getting through to eachother. My sole issue, is that it was an attempt at translation which resulted in skewing an idiom; further resulting in people thinking the guidebooks paint Temari as a universe buster. You don't need to have the raw text and a translator on hand to realise something like that; with that said, it's no coincidence that the first translation Gemmysaur quoted has a noticeably different heading which is coherent given the context. Much more so than the one we're currently discussing.

Anyways, I guess our discussion is ultimately pointless, since it's established the heading mistranslated or not is a figure of speech. As mentioned by Gemmysaur; as a result, won't contribute anything tier-wise.
