How does the Shoggoth's mimicry work?

From what I gather, I believe it pertains to their ability to mimic whatever shapes and organs they need for any given task, as well as any forms they require for a given circumstance.

Which seems a little more like Adaptation than Mimicry to me, but whatever.

So...I assume that means it can copy a Mogall and then land an inconclusive as they have a war that lasts forever via duplication

Or that's not how it works and the Mogalls win via sheer numbers

Granted, I could be wrong. My understanding of their ability isn't as thorough as some other people here.
