Tirek absorbs ponies Equestrian Magic (life energy/essence) multiple times yet no ponies died. Just weakened
The Princess give Twilight all of their magic, losing their cutie marks and magic. Yet are just weakened and still alive and again even when turned to stone, having their magic stolen by the Storm King, are still alive after being freed
Survived Starlight removing their cutie marks (Their destiny, as Shown in the Season 3 final. And also thus removing their magic)
The Rainbooms were fine having Sci-Twi drain their magic (albeit also weakened temporarily by it, and eventually gained back their magic so Sunset could become Daydream Shimmer via the Magic of Friendship)

• Life Manipulation (Magic is repeatedly referred to as life force and essence, effectively meaning that when they cast spells, they do so using their own life force)

It makes sense to me as well, and considering it some kind of soul rather than literal life is more supported by what we see when it's removed as you pointed out. The term 'essence' especially gives that connotation.

Oh, and it's also kind of implied to be related to the cutie marks, which represents 'who they really are' or whatever, so more soul iconography there.
