The novel was written in 1980. However, we know that Halloween 2 takes place in 1978. So the story takes place in 1978, not 1980. But that's not important.

I don't understand why the statement “faster than this camera” isn't taken as hyperbole.

So it moves faster than a woman's eye, and they call it faster than a camera. Don't you think that's an hyperbole? Plus, there's nothing to back it up.

Okay, but couldn't this be hyperbole? And what about the historical event? Wouldn't you need the fastest camera of the 1970s?

Fastest as of 1978 is probably the safest bet. Even if it had been 1980, that's still the first of ten years in the 80's, so using the fastest of the 80's seems questionable.
