oh alright, my bad.First of all that’s not what he said. No where does Mike Carey state that Lucifer is not bound by “any” writer. This is what he said.
“My protagonist turned out to belong to that rare subspecies of characters who—to paraphrase Neil…—have their own lives off the page and move while you’re not looking.”
Mike Carey is speaking figuratively about the type of literary character or protagonist that Lucifer is. He’s not talking about Lucifer’s literal ontological level of existence in the comics. So when Mike said Lucifer is one of those characters who have their own life “off the page” he’s just talking about how as he was writing the comics, it felt like for him that Lucifer’s character was not something he could control or write. That’s it.
Lastly, none of this should translate to giving Lucifer a high 1-A feat. The stuff involving Lucifer living outside the plot and the page and being unbound from Mike Carey was just figurative speech for how Lucifer as a character was hard for Mike Carey to write. And when Mikes talking about the page it’s very clear that he’s speaking about the literal page and not the Overvoid who’s a fictional character that represents the comic book page.
