Neither of which work particularly well against tentacruel since it's still metal.

Well Focus Punch is fighting type.
But Thunder Punch has an element attached to it so it becomes electric type.
Worst case scenario Kirito launches an attacks with 2 types and gets half Physical damage for the sword and Double Special damage from the electric part of his attack.

pretty sure unless the attack itself is a certain element, that the attack no matter the material would just be normal (considering treeko using pound isn't grass type, or metang using a physical non-steel type attack isn't automatically steel)
