How to determine planet size?

For standards of any planet, is there some special requirement for finding something scale the size of the planet? If it doesn’t give any direct statements or distances for reference between two points, Would having a moon mean something as well? If the map of the Earth is geography base, would you use and size reference like mountains for scaling?

If not, would any planet where a story take place be considered just Earth size for reference?

Yes, we can use pixel scaling or just use a standard planet size.
