I think the same but WZ awake after Madara summoned Gedo Mazo if i remember correctly. Hashirama died before the end of first war and I think even Kishimoto doesn't know the answer.

Hashirama lived during a time of constant war. Perhaps eventually, he fell in combat. Although I've heard there was a jutsu he kept using that eventually resulted in his death, but I've always denounced that as headcanon.
