Excluding Rose Quartz, Steven and all the gems that have healing powers... there's some facts to consider:
1. In the short "What are gems" it is revealed that the gems are... gems. Their bodies are actually "holograms... with mass".
2. In "So many birthdays" Pearl told that gems may not die of aging... but retreat their bodies into their gems exposes them to be shattered, and die.
3. In "An Indirect Kiss" it is shown how easy is to crack a gem, as Amethyst got hers cracked by falling from a cliff. Also, once the gem (what she is) got cracked, she needed to go to Rose's Fountain to be healed.
So what do you think?
My thoughts: the point 3 is a clear difference between them and beings like Cell, Kid Buu and many others that can rebuild their bodies at will.
