As for how this battle goes it seems to be incon so far. D can just keep killing Lavos over and over again, but acausality type 3 happens.

Drained Magus, who was admittedly one of the strongest magic users of the series at this point, just by being there. Energy absorption comes from the Mammon Machine, which is a plot point - it works through Lavos, it uses its energy, is basically an extension of it and may absorb and convert all types of energy in-verse (For example, if you attack it with Magic, it's absorbed, converted and increases its attack power), sans those that come from the Masamune. It can even release the absorbed energy from attacks for a devastating one.
