So I've noticed some other wikis have specialized badges relating to the wiki itself, and I always thought that was a cool idea. I was wondering if we should do the same thing, and perhaps have badges renamed to fit with our subject matter (i.e. "Pounce" could become "Speedblitz", "The Creator" could become "Omnipotent", etc.) with related pictures, to boot.

Please note, this is not a massive project that will require copious amounts of effort and divert attention from other things. It's something I could do myself in a matter of minutes. I wanted to make this thread because despite not being a serious issue, I:

A) Thought it would be fun.

B) Wanted to ask for input from other staff members on the idea.

C) Get ideas for pictures and badge names from members.

So again, this is just for fun, and something that can be accomplished incredibly easy if we decide to go through with it. I'm highlighting this thread because I'd like to hear everyone's opinions. Thank you for your time.

Do you mean the names for the various contribution badges? For example, make 500 edits, get 100 points, and the like? If so, I think that we should stick to the ones that we already have rather than invent silly new names.

In addition, I am a bit worried that it will reset the ranking board.

Yes, ones like that. The names do not have to change. We could also just do pictures. Or neither. I just thought it would be a fun idea. In addition, I can contact the wikia staff and ask if it will affect the ranking board.

According to wikia's badges page, turning off achievements and turning them back on again won't affect badges or ranking, so I doubt renaming them would, either. Nonetheless, I can contact them about it specifically if there are still concerns.

That's a good idea just to be sure.

We don't have to do them all at once, thankfully. They can be edited any time we like.

Custome badges tend to disrupt the regular edit-flow of the wiki, by making everyone forcus on specific namespace edits.

At this point of time, I feel new badges would lead to chaos, so I am against any new badges for the time being. I am fine with modifying the image and name of pre-existing badges, if implemented properly.

@Azathoth: The new badges can be implemented for wiki-wide projects in December and January, where they will be a good initiative for people to partake in the projects.

I also made a post on the community central forum here. Apparently, to address everyone's concerns, no. Apparently these changes do not negatively affect achievements in any way.

Well, the problem is that usually, for more specific series-centric wikis, they simply give badges named after its characters and concepts. Our wiki does not have that specialisation. It is much broader in scope. So it would get kind of silly if we started giving people badges based on our tiering categories and the like.

Hence, why I think that the badge names are fine the way that they currently are.

Yes, but we do have the luxury of being a character indexing wiki, meaning the names can be more related to vs terms or whatever, but images can be from a multitude of well known series that visitors are likely to recognize.

Well, I don't think that Vs terms are related to uploading 250 images and the like. Also, there is the question of which series are most merited to get images for the badges. Regardless which series we select, there will be complaints that we should have selected other ones.

We'll figure something out. Also, with 40 badges, we have plenty of room for very different and memorable fictions.

Indeed, but we don't need to change all of them. For instance, "Lucky Edit" is definitely fine where it is, but perhaps the picture could be changed.

Yeah. Keeping the names, but coming up with better images might be a less controversial idea. For example Lucky Edit could feature a character who is well known to have astonishing luck, such as Longshot or Mihoshi? Although a representative image of something lucky occurring should be better.
