An abstraction is not necessarily a concept.
Depending on the context, yes Darkness and Death will be concepts.

Hard to explain. If it's stated that they're abstractions, it would take something like "of the entire universe" for it to really be perceived as a concept. I say this because Darkness is an abstraction but manipulating it is just Darkness Manipulation. I think Ichibei from Bleach can help you find some context. For death, it has to be death itself that's being manipulated and not the death of a particular being.
