A Class Question

Where did the wiki get the names for lifting strength classes? I can probably guess that Class 1 to Class 100 refer to the number of metric tons since Class 1 is 1000 kg (or one ton), Class 5 is 5000 kg, et cetera, but what about the ones named after letters? What do those letters stand for? Roman numerals? The only letter on the chart that's a Roman numeral is M, which is the Roman numeral for 1000, so that can't be it. Do these letters stand for something, and if so, what is it? Was this system imported from some other group that I couldn't find with a Google search, and how was it decided on if it wasn't?
