The Comics for MGS1 and 2 are actually secondary canon. I found some commentaries from Kojima / Konami about it.
I also did find evidence that suggests Twin Snakes isn't nearly as non-canon as people say it is.
But yes, MGS needs revisions.
I was almost certain Artemiisia was a sock from the start. Made an account shortly after the mass block, primarily posted on Bleach / FT / RWBY related threads, seemed familiar and friendly with Regis and other users despite being new to the site...

The thing is, the Mother Boxes terraform the planet starting from a single point. Then it spreads around said point on a 360┬║ radius that grows exponentially larger. It will eventually be covering most of the planet.
Well, they do also say that one Mother Box can do it, and the reason Superman wasn't destroyed by the Mother Box, whereas a planet's surface would, was because he was more durable than it. I do admit it's a bit weird to quantify.
But from what we can see it seems that it takes a little while...
